The Code

About the Code

This Code has been developed by a coalition of EV charging specialists, infrastructure providers, senior fire service leaders, and fire engineering experts. The initiative is independently chaired and advised by a former Chief Fire Officer with extensive experience in fire safety, fire engineering, operational firefighting, and strategic fire risk management.

The result is a technically sound, proportionate, and operationally practical Code informed by real-world experience in infrastructure delivery, fire engineering, operational firefighting, building safety, and fire risk management.

What is the primary purpose of the EVCORE Alliance Code of Practice?

The Code provides a structured, technically sound framework for the safe, coordinated installation and operational management of EV charging infrastructure within residential and mixed-use developments. It is designed to treat managed infrastructure as a proactive fire prevention and electrical safety measure.

Does this Code replace existing electrical or statutory fire safety standards?

No. This voluntary Code is designed to complement—not replace—existing standards such as BS 7671, the Building Safety Act 2022, OZEV/Arup fire safety guidance, and RISCAuthority RC59 recommendations. It does not replace a building's Fire Strategy or legal Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) requirements; instead, it provides practical, guiding framework assistance to help responsible persons determine if an EV installation represents a material change to their existing safety processes.

Who should use and align with this Code?

Anyone who supports the safe, coordinated installation of EV charging infrastructure should support. The Code is designed for building owners, managing agents, responsible persons, insurers, fire risk assessors, and competent charge point installers to ensure building-wide infrastructure is safe and insurable.

What are the benefits of adopting a building-wide, managed EV infrastructure system?

Implementing a building-wide, managed system establishes a robust, future-proof framework for multi-unit developments. This proactive approach ensures consistent installation standards, centralised emergency isolation capabilities, and intelligent load management. By prioritising a coordinated network, properties successfully mitigate the long-term safety, structural, and insurance "accumulation risks" associated with unmanaged incremental electrical loading and repeated, fragmented penetrations of vital fire compartmentation.

What does joining the Alliance mean?

Joining the Alliance is free. Once you have downloaded the Code of Practice and read through it, you can submit your details to register your support. Following a brief committee review, you will be formally welcomed into the network and provided with the EVCORE Alliance logo to display across your brand or personal assets, demonstrating your commitment to safe, managed EV charging infrastructure practices.
